4.151. How do I price vehicle lettering and vinyl removal on the same vehicle?

I have a client who has 4 work vehicles that have a business name and phone number
in 3 places on each vehicle. they want to change the lettering of the
name (because it's too small)
and change the phone number to a new phone number.

The area that the new letters will be in is 12"h x 18"w.

I am tinkering with pricing in the "Window Graphics" plug-in because I am having to go to his location
and put the lettering on and i need to charge a "cleaning charge" to remove the old lettering on each of
the 4 vehicles, in 3 places on each vehicle.

Further details:

I will be using black intermediate vinyl, 1.5" to 2.0" letters (bold) i have set my hourly and production rate to $40 per hour.

Shop Workload 50%

can you give me an example of what to charge for this?
Also what is a fair cleaning charge since there are 12 places that need
to be cleaned?
is $10 to $15 enough? too much? Again the area is about a 12 x 18
and what I will
be cleaning off is about 33 letters that are about 1.25" tall.

Window graphics is a logical place for the type of work you are
describing; good choice. Your setup sounds OK (if you arrived at the
$40 hourly rate by using the overhead worksheet, then that's fine -
otherwise it sounds a bit low).

Of primary concern is that the "cleaning" charge of $20 (default) was
for windex and a rag, not vinyl removal.
Under most circumstances you will require a heat gun and razor blades, plus plenty of patience, to remove the vinyl. It is unlikely the job you have described would take less than 1-2 hours, and
probably will take 2-3 hours. An alternative approach would be to obtain tools available
on the market that are designed to ease vinyl removal, and can be chucked into a drill. That is if you want to make a tool investment on this one.

I would charge the customer hourly for the vinyl removal, explaining the
difficulty of doing it and that you cannot predict in advance how long
it will take. You can also let the customer do that part.

A final suggestion is to use High Performance vinyl for this job.
I realize it's more expensive, but intermediate vinyl on a vehicle will
crack and peel within one year which puts your reputation on the line.
It's better to always use the best vinyl for outdoor applications,
especially on vehicles.
