HomeEstiMate Version 1How Do I...Can I back up my data on floppy and restore it on a different computer?

4.4. Can I back up my data on floppy and restore it on a different computer?

I have two computers running estimate that are not networked. I want to backup my data from one computer and restore it on the other. Can I do that?

You can definitely back up your data from one computer and restore it on another.

1. To do so you will need a floppy disk or other storage media that the backup data will be saved to.

2. You will need to remember that the data you restore on the second computer will overwrite any existing data that may be there. So if it contains data: customer lists, estimates, jobs etc. that you need you will first want to backup that data first.

3. * On the computer you want to back up data on, click Management>backup/restore and the backup/restore data files window will appear, with the backup tab in the forefront.

* Click the backup button on the right. From the 'save as' dialog box click the 'save in' drop down list at the top and choose '3-1/2' floppy A or other drive/location you may have in mind. (This can span multiple floppy discs if necessary). Then enter a name for the file in the file name field at the bottom and click the save button to backup the data.

* You have now backed up your data! Now we will need to restore it on the new computer.
* To restore your data first re
move the floppy or other media from the drive on the former computer and insert it into the new computer. Start EstiMate on the new computer and click Management>backup/restore.

* On the Backup/restore data files screen click the restore tab then click the restore button on the right.

* From the open dialog that appears, click the 'look in' drop down box at the top and point it to the '3-1/2' floppy A or other drive you may have stored the data. When the data file appears ( it will have the .ebk file extention) click on it to highlight it and click open.

* EstiMate will restore your data.

* Congratulations! You have now successfully backed up your data on the former computer and restored it on the new one.

IMPORTANT NOTE PLEASE READ:
Due to the fragile nature of floppy discs it is advised if backing up using a floppy to also do an additional backup on a 2nd floppy as insurance against corrupt media.
